If not stuck the log should slide back and the jaw will close. Small logs sometimes will slide right on, but found big ones need the upper jaw tip just under the log slightly, and have to tilt forks back and raise them off the ground at the same time to "toss" the log back, and hope the upper jaw isn't clamping the log between the fork tip and jaw tip. Now you most likely have to gently go forward, tilt the forks back, lower, and keep the upper jaw tight. Lower bottom forks until they touch the ground, move forward until the log is tight against them, and try to close the upper jaw. Move the loader forward until the upper jaw is over the log, but before the bottom forks would hit when lowered. Start out with the jaw all the way open and the fork tipped down slightly about a 45 degree (or less) angle from flat, but higher than the log. Jaw won't open far enough for big logs to come at it with forks flat on the ground either, also the log just slides across the ground too. Can't just pluck at it from above, have to finesse the thing over a big log.
